Sherbert Cabot Benton, 87, of Conway died Monday (Jan. 2, 2006).

He was born Dec. 17, 1918, in the Centerville community, east of Greenbrier, to Sherrill Cabot and Carrie Mae Blythe Benton. His father was in the Army in France during World War I at the time of his birth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Pansy Benton Mills; and his brother, Joe R. Benton.

He was a member of Company G of the 153rd Infantry while attending Arkansas State Teachers College. He was activated with that unit in November 1940. He served more than five years on active duty during World War II. He held the rank of Captain before leaving active duty. He served several years in the Army Reserve.

He graduated with a BSE degree from Arkansas State Teachers College (now University of Central Arkansas) in 1940 and was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He served as manager of the Carl Bailey Company, a farm implement business in Conway, was the owner and manager of the Sherbert Benton Insurance and Real Estate Agency in Conway from 1952 until he sold the business and retired in 1993.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Green Grove Masonic Lodge No. 107, a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of the Scimitar Shrine. He was president of the Mutual Insurance Agents Association of Arkansas and served on the Faulkner County Democratic Committee for two terms and as a Conway City Alderman for three terms. He was an active member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Conway. Sherbert was an extrovert who loved hunting, fishing, cooking and growing vegetables.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elizabeth Bailey Benton, who he married on July 31, 1941; by his children, Sharon Benton Lessenberry, Mark B. Benton and his wife, Virginia Mathis Benton; his grandchildren, Lee B. Lessenberry and wife, Dr. J'Ann Boyd Lessenberry, of Pine Bluff, Ark., Adam Benton and his wife, Heather Shupe Benton, of Moore, Okla., Blake Benton and Brooklyn Benton of Conway; and by his great-grandchildren, Bailey Lessenberry of Bentonville, Ark., Ashlyn, Hayden, Lauren and Ryan Lessenberry of Pine Bluff, Ark.

Graveside funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Conway, followed by a 2 p.m. memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church of Conway, with Dr. John R. Shell and Rev. Philip Shell officiating both services. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home, 501-327-7727.
