Howard was the youngest child in a family of five known children, all born in Montana. His brother and sisters:

Howard's mother died a month after he was born. His father's brother, Dr. Andrew Lawson McIntire, took baby Howard home with him to Nicholas County, Kentucky to raise.
In 1917, Howard was living in Lexington, Kentucky - his World War I Draft Registration Card shows he signed his name in 1917 as H. D. McIntyre.
Howard moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where is enrolled as a student in the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, and where he met his future wife, Aurelia Jessima Plack.
Aurelia Jessima Plack was born April 25, 1895, in Ohio to parents Johannes John Plack, born in Germany (1839-1895) and Elizabeth Kiefer, born in Ohio (1854-1915). Aurelia was the younger daughter of a family of two children. Her older sister was Marie Plack (1893-1918), both born in Ohio.
About 1919, Howard and Aurelia married and settled in Hamilton County, Ohio. They were both doctors and co-authored articles regarding brain tumors and neurology. Both were involved in the Neurological Service of the Cincinnati General Hospital and the Department of Internal Medicine (Neurology) of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
The McIntyres settled in Ohio and had five known children: Clifford, Aurelia, Anne and Jane (twins), and Howard.
