He began driving the NASCAR circuit at age 17 with the Granatteli Brothers as his sponsor. He also did demolition and stunt performances. During the off season, he worked construction at Sintex Mars on the Lake County Garden project.
On Nov. 18, 1963, he married Marie Zukas in Metropolis, IL.
While working at U.S. Steel and Wire, Frank was deferred from active duty and assigned to continue drawing bullet wire for the U.S. Army through out the Korean Conflict. Frank left after 11-1/2 years and accepted a position at Allendale School for Boys. He began foster parenting 30-40 children until 1982 when he suffered a stroke while working in the maintenance department of the Great Lakes Naval Training Center.
In 1987 after retirement, he relocated to the Bagley area. He was a member of the Carney Evangelical Free Church, Masonic Lodge No. 78 in Waukegan, completed Scottish Rites in Chicago, and was a lifetime member of the Tebala Temple of Shriners in Rockford. Frank was also active in the Carney-Nadeau Lions Club, Booster Club and participated in the Senior Companion Program of Delta and Menominee counties.
He is survived by his wife Marie of Daggett;
a son, Michael South,
friends and extended family.
Family and friends may call at the Carney Evangelical Free Church, June 30, from 3 p.m. until time of funeral service at 5 p.m. Pastor Gary Page officiating. Burial will take place in Carney Free Church Cemetery, July 1 at 10 a.m. Anderson Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson, is assisting the family with arrangements.
