John Kenneth Mumford passed away on the 6th of May, 2014 in Spanish Fork, Utah, at the age of 93. He died of natural causes and had suffered from progressive peripheral neuropathy for 30 years.
He was born April 10, 1921 in Ogden, Utah, the second son of John Flitton Mumford and Rhoda Stitt Mumford. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1940 and attended Weber College. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor he was working at the Southern Pacific Railroad in Ogden as a machinist apprentice. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force October 2, 1942 and upon graduation from the Army Air Force Cryptographic School in Pawling, N.Y. was immediately sent to the European Theater. He spent the next 30 months as a cryptographer in Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scotland and Paris, France. One of the few joys he had during this time was meeting and enjoying the Scottish people. To his parent's greatest joy he returned from World War II on Christmas Day in the late evening, the last of their three sons to return home. He was honorably discharged on December 28, 1945 but also served an additional three years in the Air Force Reserves.
He married Ann Taylor of Plain City, Utah in the Salt Lake LDS Temple November 15, 1946 and wants his friends to know what a beautiful and wonderful girl he was married to for over 65 years. Following her death 22 months ago he mourned greatly and never recovered.
After returning from military service he attended Weber State College and the Pacific Coast Banking School in Seattle, Washington. He taught banking classes for the American Institute of Banking and basic accounting at Weber State University night school. He had been a member of the American Institute of Banking, the National Association of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers, the Hill Field Administrative Club, the American Society of Military Comptrollers, and the Ogden Lions Club.
He was a high priest and lifetime member of the LDS Church serving in various positions. He most enjoyed teaching Sunday school and Priesthood.
He worked in the banks of Weber and Davis counties for twenty years before being employed at Hill Air Force Base, where he worked until he retired as the Chief of the Pay and Travel Section in 1983. Upon retiring he was awarded the "Outstanding Civilian Career Service Award" by General James P. Mullins USAF Commander of the Air Force Logistics Command.
In his younger years he enjoyed golfing, hiking, snowmobiling, and square dancing. He and Ann spent many summers traveling throughout the Western States and Canada. In 1989 they moved from Logan to St. George where they remained until they could no longer dance or golf and needed to return to Ogden to be closer to family.
His greatest pride and joy was his association with his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and welcomed them at every opportunity. He was a great father and grandfather and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by three daughters, Suzanne (Kent) Callister, Payson, UT; Debby Rhea, Jackson, WY; Rebecca (Dennis) Ours, La Costa, CA; 10 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers, Col. Elmer S. Mumford and Marvin E. Mumford.
The family wishes to express our great gratitude to the Symbii Hospice nurses and staff especially Dana Mutch, Katie Mitchell, and Paige Romney, as well as The Legacy House Assisted Living employees who so gently cared for and loved our dad.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
