A devoted mother. Charlotte, a widow of John Henry Branch, was the affectionate mother of three sons; John, Sanford and Hamilton. When the three Branch brothers left to serve their country, they and their mother began a faithful correspondence through letters. Throughout her written words, the reader can sense her never-ending love for the three boys. "I am ever your Mother" or "With sincere love Your Mother" was a representative ending of her letters. When a son failed to write often, she would immediately implore: "Why don't you write to me?" When hostilities began in 1861, Charlotte saw her three sons leave Savannah, Georgia - only two would return to her. John, the eldest, would fall in the first key battle of the war and die in a brother's arms. Her youngest son Hamilton wrote her of his death; "My Dear Dear Mother ... the cold hand of death has been in our family. John our beloved has been killed ..."

Sanford, an "Immortal 600" officer, was captured two times, and would be falsely listed as killed in action at Gettysburg.

With reliance and faith in her God, Charlotte Branch endured it all.
