Civil War Union Soldier. He was 22 years old, a resident of West Chester, Pennsylvania and a "Laborer" when he was mustered in was mustered in as a Private in Company E, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 9, 1861. He served through most of the war, rising to Sergeant. He was wounded at Petersburg, Virginia on July 8, 1864 and was eventually honorably discharged on January 7, 1865.
