GEORGE M. LUHN, SR. of San Antonio died Wednesday, September 15, 1993. He was born in Brenham, Texas on May 2, 1899, the youngest of ten sons born to Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Luhn. The Luhn family moved to Houston in 1905. George Luhn attended grade schools in Houston and Taylor, Texas, where the family moved in 1912. Mr. Luhn graduated from Taylor High School in April, 1917 and joined the U.S. Navy shortly after the beginning of World War I, where he served aboard the Battleship U.S.S. Kansas for a year and a half. Upon discharge from the Navy at the end of World War I, Mr. Luhn entered the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from the Law School with an L.L.B. degree in 1924. While attending the University, George lettered in football and boxing and served as a volunteer football coach with the Texas football team of 1924. He held the only varsity letter in boxing ever granted by the University of Texas, and was the last survivor of the undefeated 1923 football team. In 1925, Mr. Luhn moved to Houston where he was employed at Roxanna Petroleum Company, subsequently Shell Oil, in the title department. He worked for Shell Oil Corporation until 1933 when he moved to San Antonio with his family, consisting of his wife, the former Bettye Barton of Taylor, Texas; her mother, Mrs. W. L. Barton, and one son, George M. Luhn, Jr. A second son, Graham B. Luhn, was born in San Antonio in 1937. While in San Antonio, Mr. Luhn joined an oil company known as the Atkins and O'Neil, forming the Santa Clara Oil Company, subsequently known as Wellington Oil Company of Delaware, of which Mr. Luhn was Executive Vice President and General Counsel, serving as such until 1941. The company was then sold to Seaboard Oil Company. Mr. Luhn then volunteered for service in the Army Air Force, rising to the rank of Major. After graduation from several Army schools, including the Command and Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, he served as combat intelligence officer with a Photo Reconnaissance unit in North Africa and Italy. In the latter part of 1944, the war was about over in Italy and Mr. Luhn returned home to San Antonio where he had reentered the oil business. He then joined with several of the men who had been with the Wellington Oil Company and formed another Santa Clara Oil Company of which Mr. Luhn was President. Since that time, Mr. Luhn has practiced law and engaged in oil operations. Mr. Luhn was a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar Association and the San Antonio Bar Association. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Alamo Heights School District for seven years, and served as President for two years when the present school was built. He was a member of the American Legion, the Reserve Officers' Association, the Military Order of World Wars and has served with a number of other civic organizations. Mr. Luhn was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he served as a member of the Vestry a number of times and also twice as Senior Warden. Mr. Luhn was also a member of the Conopus Club, the Argyle Club. the San Antonio Country Club, the 200 Golf Club and was a former president of the San Antonio Quarterback Club. Survivors: wife, Catherine H. Luhn, two sons, George M. Luhn, Jr of San Antonio and his wife, Hope and their sons, Eric, Brian, George III and daughter, Laura, and Graham Luhn of Houston, and his wife, Betty and their daughters. Elizabeth and Dabney. Other survivors include Hugh Halff and his wife, Marie and Kay Edson and her husband, Tom. Service Friday, 9:30 A.M., Christ Episcopal Church, 510 Belknap, San Antonio, the Rev. Edward Schroder officiating. Pallbearers: Eric Hoffman, Brian Hoffman, Tom Edson, Tom Bibb, Dr. John Case and Joseph Martinez. Honorary Pallbearers Dr. David R. Sacks, General John Foster, Milton Spencer, Roland Arnold, Wilbur Matthews, Orville Carr, Jess Wright, Harold Herndon, Jack Locke, Sr and Ellis Wilson, Sr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the charity of choice.
