James J. McGranahan/Granahan, Sr. was born in Philadelphia, Pa in May of 1873. He married Anna Schrank of Philadelphia on 16 Jan 1894. They had 8 children, one (Joseph) died in infancy. The other children were James, Jr., Jane (Jennie), Helen, John, Edward, Charles and Anne. James was a stonemason. At some point in the late 1800's, James dropped the "Mc" prefix from his name. However, this is not consistent in the available records of the time. US Census records list the family as Granahan; however, several Philadelphia City Directories, a WWI draft card and his burial record list him as McGranahan. In the late 1920's the Granahans moved from Philadelphia to Pennsauken, New Jersey where several built homes on 46th Street. The 1940 US Census shows the families of John Granahan, Edward Granahan, Jennie Granahan Wallin, Anne Granahan Johnson and Charles Granahan all living within a few blocks of one another on 46th street in Pennsauken.
