Following an extended illness, the Very Reverend Nicholas Bliley, OSB, JCD, Prior of Belmont Abbey and Vicar General of the Abbatia Nullius of Belmont, died in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, on March 21, the feast day of St. Benedict, the founder of the Order of which Father Nicholas was a member.

Father Nicholas was born in Richmond, Virginia, on December 6, 1893. He entered the Order of St. Benedict at Belmont Abbey in 1912 and five years later, on June 3, 1917, he was ordained to the priesthood by the late Bishop Leo Haid, OSB.

During his monastic life, Father Nicholas held many important positions of trust and authority in the maintenance and government of the monastery. For many years he was procurator of the institution and was well known throughout North Carolina for his knowledge of animal husbandry.

Since the latter part of 1935 he was been Prior of Belmont, where he taught canon law and moral theology in the seminary. He held a doctorate in canon law from the Catholic University of America. He celebrated his silver jubilee in the priesthood last year at Belmont and at St. Mary’s Church, Richmond.

Funeral services were held from the Abbey Cathedral with the Right Reverend Vincent G. Taylor, OSB, DD, Abbot-Ordinary of Belmont offering the Pontifical Requiem Mass. Father Nicholas was survived by two sisters, one a nun residing in Baltimore and the other a nun residing in Richmond. He also has an aunt who is a nun in the Benedictine Order residing at Bristow, Virginia.
