Father Cuthbert Edward Allen, OSB, died on December 1, 1977, a few weeks after the 50th anniversary of his first monastic profession.

Edward Allen was born in 1906 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He originally aspired to the monastic life at St. Anselm Abbey in his native New Hampshire, but after entering the Benedictine’s common novitiate in Pennsylvania he transferred to Belmont Abbey and made his simple profession of monastic vows in 1927, taking the name Cuthbert in religion life. He continued his studies in theology at Belmont and was ordained a priest in 1922. For two years following his ordination, Father Cuthbert served as pastor of the Gastonia and Shelby, North Carolina, parishes. Continuing his graduate studies he earned a Masters of Arts degree in history and sociology at the Catholic University of America, with further work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

During his 50 years at Belmont Abbey, Father Cuthbert held virtually every administrative and teaching position possible: president, vice chancellor, rector, dean of men, director of public relations, and executive vice president.

Father Cuthbert was a widely known figure throughout the South. He served on numerous committees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, on the North Carolina State Commission on Elementary Education, and the North Carolina Conference of Colleges and Universities for which he served as president. He was well known for his work with the Belmont Chamber of Commerce, the American Red Cross, and for the Gaston County Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews from whom he received the Silver Medallion award. In 1975 he was awarded the Bene Merenti award from Pope Paul VI in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Catholic Church.

Many friends and associates joined his brother monks in celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial in the Abbey Church, with Abbot Jude Cleary, OSB, presiding. Internment followed in the monastic cemetery. Established in his memory, The Cuthbert Allen Lecture brings an internationally known speaker to the Abbey College campus each year.
