Henry Lewis Colegrove was the son of James Colegrove and Deborah Bennett Colegrove. He was a Union soldier during the Civil War, serving with Company A of the 39th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted several times, serving throughout the entire war. He married Mary A. McNaly (McNelly) on November 16, 1856 in Scioto County. He was a farmer by profession. He and Mary had six children: James Lewis Colegrove (1858-1917), Inis Alvira Colegrove (1860-1934), John Henry Colegrove (1862-1940), Erminia Colegrove (1864 - ?), Melvin H. Colegrove (1867 -1940) and William H. Colegrove (1868-1920). He died of tuberculosis.
