Marian Evelyn (Backenkeller) Brown passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, May 5, 2014, at Grand Park Assisted Living in Billings. She was born Aug. 28, 1917, to Nicholas Henry and Mary Elsie (Turner) Backenkeller. She grew up east of Broadview and graduated from Broadview High School in 1935.

She married Sandy Brown on Oct. 29, 1941, and they spent 72 enjoyable years together until Sandy passed away in May of 2013. They moved to the Hay Basin area after the death of Marian's father in October of 1944 and farmed there until they retired. Later they moved to Billings. After Sandy's death Marian moved to Grand Park.

Sandy and she enjoyed traveling and made some memorable trips to the Panama Canal, Alaska, Hawaii and Scotland. She also made many short trips around the United States with her sister Phyllis.

Marian accomplished much in her long life of 96 years. She was a good cook, a beautiful seamstress, a wonderful photographer, and a talented artist. Several years she entered photos in the Midland Empire Fair and participated in the art auction in the Lincoln Art Show in Lincoln, showing some of her watercolor paintings for this event. She also took part in the "quick draw" competition there.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a brother, Ted Backenkeller; an infant sister; and her lifelong best friend, Nina Glasgow.

Survivors include her six children, Dennis (Marion) Brown, of Roundup, Doris Brown, of Laurel, Kathleen (Fred) Turek, of Carlton, Ore., Ross (Joyce) Brown, of Billings, Sharon (Chuck) Racicot, of Libby, and Nick Brown, of Billings; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Phyllis Adolph, of Roundup; two sisters-in-law, Daphne Brown, of Roundup, and Eileen Diener, of Casper, Wyo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Her family is indebted to the nurses and staff at Grand Park for the excellent care they gave Marian and for their help after her passing.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. in the Broadview Evangelical Church.

Burial of ashes at a later date in the Broadview Cemetery, Broadview, MT.

Memorials may be made in Marian's name to the Broadview Senior Center or to the Musselshell Valley Historical Museum in Roundup.
