Dale Koon was born in his grandmother Betts's log cabin in Vinton County, Ohio, near the community of Byer. He grew up in the Doanville, OH area and graduated from the high school in Buchtel, Ohio. He served in the army in WWII, was stationed in Paris, Texas and fought in Germany and France. He was a mechanic driving a 3/4 ton truck at the end of the convoy. He studied auto mechanics in high school. In Nelsonville, Ohio he worked as a bartender at the Saratoga Grill. He married Gloria Lee Bond on 7 December 1943. They were married in the Gallipolis Court House. After the war he worked for Johnny Freer of Nelsonville where they remodelled and built new houses. Eventually he was hired by the Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Company and worked at the Poston Power Plant (outside of Nelsonville) for 29 years. He retired in 1982. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Nelsonville. He was an avid hunter and fisherman his entire life and knew well the forests of Athens, Hocking and Vinton Counties.
