Oscar Griffin was born in Devine, TX in 1899 at the home of his parents Jack & Annie Griffin. He was the fourth of eight children born to Jack & Annie and their second and last son. He had six sisters.

As a teenager, Oscar lost sight in his right eye when struck by a buggy-whip he was using to drive a mule drawn wagon.

He was a tool-pusher in his adult life – drilling oil wells all over south Texas for Allen & Morris in the "hay days." He was really an interesting guy and a good man.

In the late 1920s, Oscar married Mildred Hyden - Mildred was close to 19 and Oscar was about 30. They had a son Jack Oscar (Hayden) Griffin born 4 Feb 1930. Jack died in 1982 - a successful dancer for many years on Broadway in New York City.

Years after they married, Mildred sold Charles of the Ritz cosmetics and toiletries for women all over Texas, including the big and affluent department stores in all of the major cities.

Oscar & Mildred were like the “cowboy and the lady.” He fondly called her "Bill" - we have no idea why. She was a very kind, classy and graceful lady – tall and always very attractive and well dressed. And Oscar was a tall handsome rancher and an "oil field hand" with an easy temperament and very likeable. They were both favorites with our family.

Oscar & Mildred first married in July of 1929; their son Jack was born the following year. They married and divorced each other 6 times during their life times; neither ever had other relationships. Except for the last marriage in 1966 and their divorce in 1973, the years for the other marriages and divorces are unknown. They remain lost to posterity along with the reasons for any of their divorces. Their divorces are all tragedies, because it is very obvious they loved each other dearly, else they would not have remarried so many times.

Mildred is not buried next to Oscar, even though he provided a place for her, which is obvious because of the the double headstone marking his grave - an inscription for her is also displayed. At one time Mildred wanted to give her body to medical science when she died, but we believe she was cremated, instead.

Oscar had a ranch near Pearsall, TX, which is where he lived when he retired. He died in a rest home in Fredericksburg, TX near his sisters Kate & Hazel. Mildred died in a rest home in Corpus Christi, near her family.
