Elverine Franklin Austin "Mary" age 86, passed away Monday, April 15, 2013 at 7 a.m. at Harvest Manor Nursing Home. She was born July 26, 1926 in DeRidder, La. to Jesse A. Franklin and Minnie Hughey Franklin. She was preceded in death by all siblings: Myrtle, Otto, Jewel, James, Huey and her parents. A private service was held April 17 by Pastor Dan Davis and Greenoaks Funeral Home. Mary was buried in Greenoaks Memorial Park next to her husband of 66 years, Everett Lavane Austin who passed in 2003. Mary moved with her family to Baton Rouge in 1953 where she resided the rest of her life. Elverine is survived by three children, Jim Austin, Pamela Austin and Zelda Austin, all of Baton Rouge. She has 10 grandkids, 19 great grandkids and 4 great-great grandkids, with over 100 nieces and nephews, great and great-great. She went to work at South Central Bell in 1942 and retired in 1973. Mary was a lifelong Christian and a member of the First Pentecostal Church of Baton Rouge. She sang in the church choir for decades. Mary was a member of the Old Colonial American Franklin Family. Her grandmother on her mother's side was a full blooded Cherokee, who walked to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears in 1838. Mary loved horticulture. She was a member of the Baton Rouge Garden Club for over 30 years, where she was a Judge at their flower shows. Mary could quote the scientific names of all basic flowers and plants. She grew special orchids in her greenhouse, which she supplied to Billy Heroman's Florist. Mary loved music, playing the piano and singing. She sang many times in the chorus with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. She was a world traveler with her husband to Europe, Egypt, Australia, Alaska, Hawaii and beyond. Mary had many, many friends in her travel clubs. Elverine Franklin Austin made her mark on this world with a long and productive life. She has now moved on to be reunited with her family and claim her heavenly reward. She will be forever loved and greatly missed -- her son.
