Civil War Union Brigadier General. Participated in the Siege of Petersburg as chief of artillery for the Army of the James' X Corps, and directed a division of black troops in the XXV Corps during the final months of the war. He had enlisted in the regular army as a private in 1851 and was appointed Brigadier General only 14 years afterwards.
