Mary S. Radford, age 97, of Bronson, died Friday, April 6, 2001 at the Laurels of Coldwater where she had ben admitted the previous evening. She had been in failing health.

Mary Susan Adams was born February 29, 1904 in Hardin County, Iowa, daughter of Emory B. and Rosalie (Chance) Adams. After a few years, the family moved to Wisconsin, leaving there to live on a farm near Motley, Minnesota. After several years, Mr. Adams sold the Minnesota property and bought a farm near Athens, Michigan, the family moving there in 1920.

Mary was a 1922 graduate of Athens High School, then earned a teaching certificate at Western Michigan Normal School in Kalamazoo and taught in Calhoun County three years.

On December 25, 1926, Mary was united in marriage to Elmer M. Radford, also of Athens. They lived in Bronson sine 1926. with several winters spent in Arizona after retirement.

Mary was active in Bronson's PTA and Band Booster's Club, Bronson's Community Fair, and was past president of the Women's League. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bronson, singing in the choir for many years and a member of the Isabel Secor's Women's Choral Group.

Mary worked diligently on the committee to get a hospital built in Coldwater and when the Branch County Community Health Center became a reality in 1939, she joined a group of ladies who spent one afternoon a week doing hospital mending.

When World War II began, Mary became a Navy Inspector at the L. A. Darling plant until war's end. She then worked in Darling's order department until her retirement when the company moved to Arkansas in 1967.

She enjoyed gardenning, traveling, photography and verse writing.

Survivors include her daughter Mrs. Robert (Helyn) Hillyer of Decatur, MI who had been caring for her at her home in Bronson since 1996; her son and daughetr-in-law, Robert J. and Wilma Radford of Clearwater, FL; six granchildren, Ed Hillyer of Dorr, MI,, Joe Hillyer of Decatur, MI, Mari Obninsky serving with the US Navy in Hawaii, Warren Obnisky of San Raphel, CA and Andrew and Duncan Shortridge living in England; great grandchildren, Heather and Matthew Hillyer of Dorr, MI, Joshua and Michele Hillyer of Decatur, MI and Edward, William, Jessica and Fredrick Shortridge all of England and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmer in 1993 and three sisters.

According to her wishes, cremation was arranged by the Kolcz Funeral Home. A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Mary S. Radford will held at 2 Pm Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Bronson with Rev. Mona Joslyn officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Churh of Bronson. Envelopes are available at the Kolcz Funeral Home.

A private graveside service and burial of ashes in the Leroy Congregational cemetery, Calhoun County will be held at a later date.
