LAID TO REST IN LEROY
Funeral of Mrs. Samantha J. Atwood Held at Old Home.
The funeral of Samantha J. Atwood was held at "Atte Wode", the LeRoy farm of the Atwood’s on Monday. January 6th, 1913. The service consisted of a discourse on "Life and Death", written by-the deceased in 1883. This she had requested should be read at her funeral. It was read by her son, Fred H. Atwood. He also spoke for a few moments of the life and aims of the deceased and expressed the thanks of the family to their friends and neighbors who had so loyally stood by them in their time of trouble. Solos were sung by Mrs. Mundy of Battle Creek. The flowers were many and beautiful.
At the grave the service consisted of reading the following:
"Samantha J. Atwood. daughter of William and Betsey Holmes. was born at Sherwood, Branch County, Michigan, Feb. 11, 1841. She died at the home of her son, Fred Holmes Atwood, 503. Melrose St., Chicago, Illinois, Jan. 2, 1913, aged 71 years. 10 months, 22 days. She left her surviving, Ephraim Atwood, her husband; Fred J. Atwood, her son: Samuel E. Atwood, her son; Lenna Atwood Ladd. her daughter; also three grandchildren, four brothers and one sister. At rest in the Congregational cemetery, LeRoy Michigan, January 6. 1913. The pallbearers were: S. 0. Rush, John Longman, Charles Bigelow, Isaiah Wise, Henry Martin and Frank VanMiddlesworth. Semi-Weekly Argus (Galesburg, Michigan) January 10, 1913 page 1
