Irene Ashworth Barnard, 74, died August 18, 1987 in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. She was a former life-long resident of Nevada, having lived in Las Vegas for over 20 years.

She was born December 1, 1912 in Lund, NV to Earl and Mary Jane Ashworth, both members of early pioneer families of Utah and Nevada. The family moved to Kimberly, NV, just outside of Ely, in 1923, where Earl could get a job as a blacksmith. Irene was schooled in Kimberly and Ely, graduating from White Pine High School in 1930. Her work during the depression took her to Reno in 1934 where she worked for Reconstruction Finance.

That job ended and she returned to Ely, where she soon met David Luther Barnard, Jr. The two were married in 1941 and soon moved to Visalia, CA where David was a flight instructor.

A position flying cargo for Pan American Airways during the war took them to San Francisco where their first daughter, Mary Lynn, was born in 1943. When the war ended, they moved back to Ely, where their second daughter, Jill, was born in 1947. The family moved to Las Vegas in 1956 to be near family.

Irene was the manager of Nevada Savings and Loan until she opened her own laundry and dry-cleaning facilities, operating them until 1977 when she moved to Reno and began ten wonderful years with her grandchildren. She was a four-time President of the Las Vegas Soroptimist Club, the longest a president had ever served.

She passed away in 1987 in South Lake Tahoe, California, where she had resided in a home for Alzheimer’s patients. She was survived by her two daughters, Mary Lynn Machabee and Jill Barnard; sister Genevieve Ashworth Knobbs Peterson and husband Douglas Peterson of Elko, NV; brother Keith Ashworth and wife Colleen of Las Vegas, and two grandsons, Scott and Tony Machabee of Reno.

Memorial services took place in Reno; burial was private. The family requested Memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Aid Society of California. Ross, Burke and Knobel Mortuary, Reno, handled arrangements.
