Private, Company C, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. He was killed, along with General George A. Custer and most of his regiment, during the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Born in Delmenhorst, Germany, he immigrated to the United States, and enlisted on December 24, 1875, at age 21, at St. Louis, Missouri. He gave his previous occupation as a Tailor. Assigned to Company C, he had hazel eyes, brown hair, a fair complexion, and was 5 feet, 6 1/2 inches tall. During the battle, his company was assigned to the Custer column, and he was killed during the retreat from the river back up Last Stand Hill. After the battle the dead soldiers were buried where they fell, and a year later, the bodies were dug up and reburied in the mass grave at the top of Last Stand Hill.
