Son of Robert Nelson Kidd and Agnes (Willoughby) Kidd. William fought at the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) where 3 of his brothers died: Nathan Laud Kidd, Preston W Kidd and Robert K Kidd. William was injured, losing part of his left leg. In spite of his injuries, when he returned home, he took in his brother Nathan's 2 young daughters, Emma A Kidd (1856 - April 1937) and Sarah Louise Kidd (4/17/1855 - 2/26/1939). William married Martha Elizabeth Johnson (9/6/1854 - 3/5/1928) in 1872 and had 9 children:
1. Pierce Kemper Kidd (7/22/1873 - 2/17/1949); married Estelle ?.
2. Howard Whitefield Kidd (5/20/1875 - 2/21/1909); married Bellie Lee Coleman.
3. William Richard Marvin Kidd (1/17/1878 - 2/4/1956); married Laura Ann Farmer.
4. James Arthur Kidd (6/2/1879 - 7/18/1966); married Mary Virginia Forsythe.
5. Robert Smith Kidd (4/28/1882 - 1/8/1954); married Hattie B Tyler.
6. Mattie Lee Kidd (3/1/1886 - 12/31/1959); married Charles Michael Urban.
7. Evelyn Whitehead "Eva" Kidd (8/8/1890 - ?); married William J Johnson.
8. Eugene Johnson Kidd (8/24/1892 - ?); married Katie D Thurmond.
9. Irene Bertha Kidd (10/11/1894 - 5/14/1972); apparently never married.

The U.S. Veterans Grave site collection lists this cemetery as the "Johnson-Kidd Family Cemetery." Also called the Johnson-Kidd cemetery in the 2011 version of the Nelson ?County Cemetery book (page 199).

He died in Elmington, Nelson County, Virginia according to his death certificate. That name is not recognized by this site.
