P.C. McLean was a native of Hudson, Columbia, New York . He was the son of Peter and Mary McLean. He has one known brother, Edward McLean of San Francisco (1807-1894)

He married Margaret Swasey 21 May 1830 in the John Street Church. The had five known children:

P.C. was a painter and grainer in Brooklyn. When his son, Peter B., came home from the Civil War sick with typhoid fever and malaria, P.C. supported P.B.'s family for several years as he recovered.

He was originally buried in Union Cemetery in Brooklyn. Union Cemetery closed and between Dec 1897 and Jan 1898 the bodies were removed and relocated. A ten acre section of Cedar Grove was dedicated for the interments, however the records identifying plots have been lost. It is unknown which plot the McLean family occupies.
