Mary Anna Karels was born on August 31, 1925 in Bellingham, Minnesota the daughter of John and Lena (Stoick) Karels. She was the second youngest of nine children. Mary graduated from Bellingham High School in 1943. She began a long career with the Telephone Company while living in California in 1944.
On September 2, 1950, Mary married Vic Weiland in Alexandria. After her daughter was born in 1953, she was a stay-at-home mom for several years before returning to work at the Alexandria Telephone Company. Mary retired in 1989.
She was creative and artistic and enjoyed such hobbies as oil painting, sewing, crocheting and gardening. She was a member of the Osakis Golf Club and also liked to square dance.
Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pat & Steve Ruby of Brooklyn Park; sister, Sally Mueller of Madison, MN and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers: Leonard, Raymond, Meinard, Marcus, and Emmanuel Karels; two sisters: Rosie Croatt Anderson and Adel Hiepler.
Memorial service was held on Friday, May 2, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at the Anderson funeral Home in Alexandria. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.
