American Folk Figure. She was the wife of Civil War Major General George Armstrong Custer. After General Custer's death at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876, she became a celebrity herself. She wrote many articles and books, and gave many lectures that contributed to the elevation of her husband to near-mythical status.
