WATERBURY — Nathaniel (Nate) Collins Sr., age 88, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at his home. Nathaniel was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Notasulga, Ala., son of the late Willie James (Kid) Sr. and Rosie Lee (Simmons) Collins. Nate was educated in the Notasulga school system. He moved to Waterbury in 1955. He was a self-taught mechanic and the owner of Collins' Family Garage on East Farm Street. Nate worked as a mechanic for Arbor Homes, Lincoln Paving Company, Darcy Trucking Company and Mack Trucks Company, all in Waterbury, and Hine Brothers Garage in Southbury. Nate spent most of his retirement at his garage.

He is survived by four daughters, Mary H. Norflet (Jasper Jr.), Teena Collins Zimmerman, Elizabeth Collins Olivo and Martha Collins, all of Waterbury; three sons, Edward Collins (Saundra) of Waterbury, Dwight Pearson and Anthony Pearson of Elizabeth City, N.C.; three sisters, Glennie Mae Cooper of Notasulga, Ala., Sally Brown and Bessie Brown of Waterbury; two brothers, John (Bernice) Brown of Tuskegee, Ala., and Jerry Brown of Waterbury; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren, an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha (Ware) Collins; three sons, Charlie Collins, Nathaniel Collins Jr. and Michael Collins; two sisters, Alice Sanders and Brenda Brown; and three brothers, Willie James Collins Jr., Jonny Will Brown and Henry Brown.

Arrangements: Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at 7 p.m. at Refuge Church of Christ, 13-15 Hawkins St., Waterbury. Friends may call Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Refuge Church of Christ until time of service and all other times at 660 Bucks Hill Road, Waterbury. Burial will be held at New Pine Grove Cemetery.
