The Lagarto was found in the Gulf of Siam (now Thailand). Frank is survived by his wife and two children.

Commander Latta commanded the submarine, USS Lagarto (SS-371). He had been awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Legion of Merit & Purple Heart. He was was KIA, with all shipmates, while aboard the USS Lagarto during an attack on a Japanese convoy near Siam in the South China Sea, on May 4, 1945. The Imperial Japanese Navy ship, Hatsutaka, is believed to have sunk the Lagarto in a depth charge attack.
