John Thomas Thigpen, 88, of Helena, AL, passed away Friday, May 2, 2014. He was born in Florence, AL on July 21, 1925. John served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII. After the war, he was married to the former Laura Jean Hammonds on December 25, 1950. They moved to South Bend, IN, and lived there for 49 years. John's career in the electricity industry spanned 37 years at Indiana & Michigan Electric Company. Following his retirement, he and wife Jean moved to Helena to be close to their grandchildren. A member of Riverchase Church of Christ in Birmingham, AL, John had a passion for telling everyone about his faith in Jesus Christ. He was predeceased by his brothers, Avery and Raliegh Thigpen; and sisters, Elizabeth Fowler, Pauline Springer, and Delphine Creekmore. Survivors include John's wife, Jean Thigpen of Helena
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Riverchase Church of Christ, Birmingham. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Riverchase Church of Christ with Dewayne Spivey officiating. Private burial will follow at Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo.
