Emry was born in Nebraska to Nels Robertson, a Danish immigrant and his American wife, Christena Anderson Robertson.

Sometime after arriving in America, Emry's father Nels changed his last name from "Rasmussen" to "Robertson." And as an adult, Emry dropped the "T" in "Robertson" for an unknown reason. Emry's descendants use the "Roberson" last name.
(Pronounced "ROBBER-sen.")

Emry was the third of six known children who were: Elvena, Lenora, [Emry], Clarence, Carl, & Glen. All of Emry's siblings and their descendants kept the "Robertson" last name.

On August 21, 1912, Emry married Ella May Bradt in Kearney, Nebraska. Together, they had 9 children: Dale, Ellis, LaVaughn, Neal, Marilyn, Reta, Mardell, Marvin and Gary. Emry and Ella eventually divorced. He later married a widow named Sophie Cordes Meisinger on March 6, 1948 in Douglas County, Nebraska.

Emry spent most of his life as a farmer and died October 30, 1958 in Glenwood, Iowa. He was buried in the Glenwood Cemetery.
