Ruth M. Brateng of Dallas, Oregon passed away in the early morning of March 27th.

Ruth was born in Bowden, North Dakota on February 6th, 1927 to Philip and Emma Reiling. She was the 3rd of 4 children. Ruth spent her early years in South Dakota and moved to the northwest with her family as a young girl. She attended Hazel Green School in Salem and went on to receive her GED from Chemeketa Community College. She met Howard Brateng when she was 19 years old and they married in Vancouver, Washington in January of 1947.

Ruth and Howard had two children and lived on a farm outside of Monmouth for 50 years growing cherries and prunes. Ruth also worked out of the home as a waitress, rural mail carrier and for the State of Oregon at the employment office, retiring in 1985. Ruth and Howard were instrumental in establishing Faith Lutheran Church in Monmouth in 1964 and were faithful members all of their lives.

Ruth was known for her remarkable beauty, inside and out, her fun loving manner, kindness and unfailing faith. Ruth enjoyed sewing, dancing, exercising, traveling, cooking and entertaining. Her friends and family remember the inviting home she maintained, her abundant feasts and impromptu line dancing lessons. She also enjoyed her children and grandchildren and was a true matriarch of the Brateng family. Ruth was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
