Frank Fred Leichtnam was born May 3, 1918 to John and Rose (Schneeberger) Leichtnam
on the Leichtnam homestead north of Presho. His life's journey ended January 5,
2006, at St. Mary's Healthcare Center in Pierre, SD.
He devoted his life to his family, his country, and the family farm which was
registered as a century farm in 2005. Frank was a hard-working man with big, strong
hands who could never get enough of riding his four-wheeler to do the necessary
chores that were such a joy to him. A Carpenter and a handyman, he loved his home
where he spent his life caring and remodeling it to accommodate his family's needs.
Frank's favorite things in life were working the land, drilling time and wheat
harvest, riding his four-wheeler, his Catholic faith, visiting friends over coffee,
reading books about western life, playing cards, making rosaries, and caring for his
livestock.
Frank attended West Annin School. His early employment was with the August and
Bertha Schultz farm south of Presho.
He joined the Army in 1942 and served in the European Theatre in World War II. His
experience as an Army Cook served in later years as he made the best meatloaf and
chili in the family.
For many years he enjoyed the annual reunion of his former Army outfit. He took
great pride in his military service but rarely spoke of the serious side of his war
experience.
Feeling very lucky to share in his life are his wife of 51 years, Berniece (Satree),
his children, Judy (Larry) Henson, Edmond, OK, Kirk Leichtnam, Pierre, SD, Karen
(Michael) Leichtnam, Silver Spring, MD, Christy Leichtnam, Rapid City, SD, Joe
Leichtnam (Cathy), Rapid City, SD, Richard Leichtnam (Kim), Presho, SD, and Melissa
(Pat) Lapka, Leona, SD, Maria Goreti Lima, a foreign exchange daughter, and his
sister Marie Hellman, San Francisco, CA. His 12 grandchildren are Christopher
Henson, Jennifer Henson, Jarod Leichtnam, Sean Leichtnam, Jordan Bittner, Brittany,
Danielle, and Victoria Henning, and George, Frederick, Anna, and Hans Lapka and his
2 great grandchildren, Zachary and James Henson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Emmanuel, Joseph, Louis, and
Charles his sisters, Bertha Krier and Sophie Leichtnam and an infant granddaughter.

Thank you Andrea.
