Mrs. Edith Jelley Dies Here Today; Funeral To Be Held Thursday
Mrs. Edith Jelley, 79, wife of Walter S. Jelley and a resident of Batavia Township nearly a half-century, died as 12:50 a.m. today at the Health Center. She had been in failing health the past two years. Born October 2, 1871 in Bethel Township, she was a daughter of Josiah and Jane (Fretter) Walker. Mrs. Jelley spent her entire life in Branch County, the early part in Bethel and the last 45 years in Batavia. She married Mr. Jelley on March 4, 1891 and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary two weeks ago today. She was an active worker in Lockwood Church, Sunday school and Ladies Aid Society, and was a member of Good Time Birthday Club. Surviving besides Mr. Jelley is one daughter, Mrs. J. B. Colman, of Ovid Township; four grandchildren, Doris and Dorothy Crawford, of Bethel, Mrs. Edith Love, of Coldwater, and Mrs. Bernadine Brauer, of Vassar; one great-grandchild, Susan Louise Brauer, of Vassar; and a brother, William Walker, of Bethel. There are also several nephews and nieces. Two daughters preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from Lockwood Church, with Rev. Herbert G. Hurrell, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Lockwood Cemetery. Shattuck Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
