Jack Abrams, 81, restauranteur and long-time Democratic leader of the 18th Ward, West End, died yesterday at Good Samaritan Hospital.
In semi-retirement the noted politician was still able to get to town once or twice a week until a few months ago and meet with cronies at the restaurant he opened in 1933 at 824 Elm St. A son, James, continues its operation.
In the restaurant business since he was 21. Mr. Abrams formerly had a place on West Sixth Street, on what is now the site of the Hotel Terrace Hilton. He also operated a bonding and surety business.
Mr. Abrams resigned about 10 years ago as the 18th Ward's Democratic executive after 48 years of service in that post. He was active in the Duckworth Democratic Club, and his son, Jack Abrams Jr, has served as its president. He twice ran unsuccessfully for City Council, in 1937 and again in 1939, as a Democrat. In 1937 he was not eliminated until the 28th PR count, when his original 4,146 first choice votes had swelled to 5,077.
Recently the Abrams residence was at 3304 Jefferson Ave, Clifton, but for many earlier years the family had lived at 558 Howell Ave. Mr. Abrams' wife, Mrs Anna McCabe Abrams, died in 1947. Surviving him, besides Jack Jr and James, are two other sons, Walter and Arthur Abrams, four daughters, Miss Geraldine and Miss Rose Abrams, Mrs Ann Wood and Mrs. Gertrude Gildea; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Solemn High Mass will be sung at 9:30 am at the Church of the Annunciation, 3547 Clifton Ave, with burial in St Joseph Cemetery, Eighth and Nebraska Ave. Friends may call after 4 pm tomorrow at the Gilligan Funeral Home, 2926 Woodburn Ave.
