Son of Dr. George and Lucy (Walker) Gilmer.(daughter of Dr. Thomas Walker.) With his Father dying when he was 2 and being the youngest of 10 children, "he was unable to do much on the property left him by his father. Thus his early education was almost neglected." The beginnings of his education came by playing with kids from the neighboring estate, the Randolph's, learning French from Martha Jefferson Randolph. He even read his Father's medical books in Latin! He later got degree at Wm. & Mary as a child prodigy and studied law under the direction of brother-in-law Wm. Wirt who was Attorney General in the cabinets of Presidents Monroe and John Quincy Adams. He published 4 books and at the request of Thomas Jefferson, he went to Great Britain to bring back foreign scholars to the new University of Virginia. He finally accepted a professorship at the School of Law. However due to poor health and death at age 36,he was unable to teach. He never married.
