PROVIDENCE --- Abel "Bill" Almeida, 60, a truck driver for the Hudson Trucking Co. for the past 14 years, died Monday in a truck accident at Routes 495 and I-195 in Wareham, Mass. He was the husband of Arrine (Walker) Almeida.

State police said Mr. Almeida was driving a 1986 Mack tanker-trailer from I-195 east onto the entrance ramp to Route 495 north. Mr. Almeida lost control of his vehicle, which crashed into the guardrail, flipped over and spilled 8,500 gallons of liquid tar.

Police said the truck left 340 feet of tire marks, and traveled along the guardrail for another 300 feet.

Medical Examiner Dr. J. Howard pronounced Mr. Almeida dead at the scene. Mr. Almeida's body was then removed from the cab and transferred to Falmouth Hospital.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation last night, but police said they suspect Mr. Almeida was traveling at an excessive speed, due to the extensive tire marks on the ramp.

Born in Warren, a son of Quirino Almeida of Providence, and the late Balbina (Freitas) Almeida, he lived in Providence for 46 years.

Mr. Almeida was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and later served in the Rhode Island National Guard. He was a communicant of Holy Name Church.

Besides his wife and father he leaves his stepmother, Mary (Ramos) Almeida of Providence; five sons, Leon Hollis, Rondie and Tracy Almeida, all of Providence, William and Brian Almeida, both of Pawtucket; two daughters, Barbara Almeida of Warwick and Donna Almeida of Pawtucket; a brother, Rodolfo Almeida of Providence; four sisters, Virginia Edmonds of Providence, Faustina Hooker of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gloria Cutler of Newark, Calif., and Rose Marie Stamps of New York City; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the Bright Funeral Home, 290 Public St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at Our Lady Chapel of Holy Name Church, Camp Street.
