Ethel Marie Conner, 87, of Granbury, Texas passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014. Born March 28, 1927 in Windber, Pennsylvania, she was the eldest daughter of Clarence and Lena Lohr. She married the late Harold Conner of Pine Grove Mills, Pennsylvania on Dec. 25, 1956.
Ethel loved to read, knit and spend time with family and friends. When she and Harold first moved to Fort Worth, they joined Faith Lutheran Church. It was there that she became one of the founding members of "The Purls" ministry. This ministry, founded in 1998, is a group of women that knit hats for premature babies, chemo patients and the homeless. They later added scarves and spa cloths with toiletries wrapped inside for the homeless.
Ethel was truly an inspiration to so many, especially the members of this ministry. Although she had scleroderma and it became increasingly more difficult for her to knit, she continued to do so, also recruiting more friends in Granbury to help. In their best year, they knitted and donated over 16,000 pieces.
The recipients of this ministry are The Salvation Army, Patriot House, Presbyterian Night Shelter, Lowden- Schutts Women and Children Program, Ft. Worth Day Resource Center, Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, Texas Oncology, Cancer Care Services, John Peter Smith and Harris Hospital neo-natal units. Her gift was truly a blessing to so many individuals.
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She is survived by son, Kevin Conner and wife Deanna; daughter, Cheryl Conner; son, Brian Conner; a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Raymond Bossi; grandchildren, Dunn and Scott Conner, Andrew, Lexy, Amanda, Ally and Aimee Ortegon; several great-grandchildren, three nieces, Karen, Sharon and Nancy and eight great-nieces and nephews.
Ethel's positive and encouraging attitude touched so many in her lifetime. She will be missed very much. It was the wish of her late husband, Harold, and of her to be cremated. Therefore her ashes will join his on Mt. Rainer in the beautiful Cascade Mountain Range near Seattle, Washington.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at the Charterhouse Community Center.
