Born 21 January 1918 in Toronto, Ontario. Son of Joseph and Betty (née Behr) Somers, of Toronto, Ontario. Brother of Harold Milton, Gerald George, Annie, Mrs. Gordon Shulman and Mrs. Ralph Bregman. He attended Huron Public School from 1923 to 1931, Harbord Collegiate from 1931 to1936 and University of Toronto from September 1937 to May 1940. He obtained a Bachelor of Commerce. He belonged to Sigma Alpha Mu at University of Toronto, the Commerce Club and Economics Department. He was the Athletic Director of University College from September 1939 to May 1940 were he coached the Intermural Football Team. He was the recipient of the Cody Trophy presented by H.J. Cody, President of the University of Toronto for best all-round athlete. He was the holder of T and U.C. First Letters, and the Jules and Jay J. Allen Award for 1st standing in 2nd year Commerce and Finance. He played hockey and track extensively, soccer and lacrosse moderately and skied occasionally. His hobbies were photography, reading and economics. Commemorated on Page 215 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance.
