Clarence Fiser
1917 - 2014

Clarence Rhea Fiser, aged 96 and ½ years old, peacefully passed on Saturday, 26 April 2014 in Florence of age related causes.

Clarence was born in 1917 in Kentucky, the oldest son of Clarence E. and Minnie A. (Welch) Fiser. He was one of ten children born to the family. He left home when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps serving in Kentucky and Illinois before being transferred to Oregon in 1937. He was assigned to the Coos County area where he met and married Myrtle L. Beckett in 1938.

They resided in the Myrtle Point area where their daughter and son were both born. Clarence proudly served as a radar man in the US Navy in World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. Returning to Myrtle Point after the war, he began work at Safeway. In 1950, the family moved to Springfield, Oregon. Very soon thereafter, Clarence was recalled to service again as a radar man in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. His duty included submarine patrol during atomic testing in the Pacific.

Safely returning to his family in 1951, Clarence began work for Weyerhauser Company in the plywood mill. During his time at the mill, the McKenzie Volunteer Fire Department was organized and Clarence was one of the original volunteers. When Springfield Fire Department built Station 2, Clarence was hired as the Engineer, a position he passionately held until his retirement.

Clarence and Myrtle were one of the original owners in the Greentrees Village and very active in its development. They spent many off duty days preparing their retirement home. Myrtle passed away suddenly at Greentrees in 1975.

In 1977, he met and married Wilma Sweet Calaway in Springfield. They remained in Springfield until his retirement from the fire department that same year.

Never one to be idle, Clarence and Wilma moved to Florence, where he went back to work hand-brush painting the exterior of Driftwood Shores. In 1980, Clarence and Wilma moved to La Pine, Oregon where he again went back to work. This time, he was the chauffeur for the Senior Center van for five years. He conveniently forgot the he was one of the seniors.

They moved back to Springfield, where Clarence once again went back to work, returning to Safeway full-time. In 1994, they moved back to Florence, where he worked full-time until 1997. He then retired for real this time.

His real retirement was filled with community service, woodworking, home improvements, golfing, being with people, laughing and enjoying his family. He served with the Grange, Florence Police Axillary and Disabled American Veterans. Clarence always had a good story or joke to share.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma; son, Robert (Laura) Fiser; daughter, Carol Parrish, step daughter, Rhonda (David) Folston; two sisters, Vanda Gulliams and Alice Baucum, nine grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren and two special friends, Mary Prairie and Jan Wines.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael McKenna and step son, Stanley Calaway.

Inurnment is in the Springfield Memorial Gardens. Friends and family are cordially invited to celebrate Clarence’s life on Saturday 7 June 2014 at 1:00pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Florence. In Lieu of flowers, the family request remembrances be made to the Oregon Honor Guard.

Arrangements entrusted to Chapel of Memories Funeral Home at West Lawn.
