Two of Four Bodies in Greenbrier Accident Not Yet Found
The search for the bodies of a Charleston woman and an 11-year old child two of four persons who drowned Sunday evening in the swollen Greenbrier river near Renick was pushed Tuesday by state and county officers. Unable to continue Monday night because of the swift current of the of the river, the searches had halted until morning.
The two bodies still unrecovered are those of Mrs. James C. Quesenberry 55 years old of Woodland Terrace Charleston and Nancy Davis the 11-year-old daughter of Mrs. Joseph R. McWhorter 29 years old of Rupert Greenbrier county also drowned when the boat in which they were crossing the stream capsized when its cable broke. The fourth person who lost his life was Robert Rutledge 30 years old of Belle.
The body of Mrs. McWhorter and Mr. Rutledge were recovered Monday morning in the shallow waters on the bank of the river.
Father Goes Back
Three motor boats were sent to the scene of the accident from Charleston on Monday night by Gale Davis, father of the missing child and former husband of Mrs. McWhorter. Mr. Davis who came from the scene Monday afternoon returned Tuesday morning.
The officers under the direction of Sheriff James W. McClung were watching the banks and shoals along the stream for several miles below the island where the accident occurred. Reports received in Charleston on Tuesday were that the swollen stream, which is ordinarily shallow had fallen 4 feet during the night.
The water was less swift and dangerous Tuesday and the searchers hoped to find the bodies soon.
J. E. Crawford Sr. of Cutler, O., the father of Mrs. McWhorter arrived in Charleston Monday afternoon. He left during the evening for Renick a mile and a half from the scene of the accident.
Mr. Rutledge's mother, of Belle, has also gone to Renick to make funeral arrangements for her son.
The four who drowned were attempting to cross the stream from the island where they had spent a week end camping trip. Joseph McWhorter, a bookkeeper for a coal company and the husband of Mrs. McWhorter stood on the bank of the island and saw the rope cable on which the ferry supported itself, snapped. The occupants of the boat were thrown into the water and dragged under the swift current as the watcher unable to assist them.
Rescued Upon Raft
Mr. McWhorter was rescued from the island where he was marooned Sunday night early Monday morning by a group of officers on a primitive log raft.
Mrs. McWhorter who was the former Miss Annie Louise Crawford was married to Mr. McWhorter three months ago. Her daughter had resided with Mrs. Quesenberry in Charleston and had attended Thomas Jefferson junior high school.
Funeral services for Mrs. McWhorter will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Ernest Thompson will conduct the services.
Burial will be at Spring Hill cemetery.
The body will be brought to the Simpson funeral home Wednesday morning.
Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Quesenbery were also incomplete. Tuesday James C. Quesenberry, her husband Hebert Quesenberry, her son and Rothwell Dewey of Ferry Branch her nephew, have been in Renick since Sunday.
