Amanda Lee Smith Johnston, age 32, of Chapel Hill, died peacefully while surrounded by her family on April 12, 2014 at Duke University Hospital.
Born in Clinton, NC, Amanda was the beloved daughter of Dr. John Braswell Smith and Jane Hatch Smith. She graduated from Clinton High School in 2000 as the valedictorian, and then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Duke University in 2004. She spent a summer volunteering with her twin sister at Gesundheit! Institute in West Virginia and then joined the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps to serve communities throughout the western United States.
Amanda returned to school and earned a Masters Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2008. After working in Greensboro at a rheumatology practice, Amanda joined her father at the Clinton Medical Clinic as a Physician Assistant in 2011.
On March 15, 2014 at the Village Chapel of Bald Head Island, Amanda married Thomas Aldridge Johnston, of Chapel Hill. She was a beautiful bride and was overjoyed to have found such a loving and devoted husband.
Amanda was a compassionate and loving sister to her twin, Elizabeth Smith Umar and husband Danny of Durham; and sisters Kelly Smith Singer and husband David of Columbia, MD, and Jackie Smith Wong and husband Jason of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Amanda was also an adoring aunt to William David Singer and Caroline Elizabeth Singer. She will be missed dearly by her mother-in-law, Shelia Johnston, and brother-in-law, Stuart Johnston, both of Jacksonville as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Amanda had many passions in life and made many friends along the way. She had a love for adventure and spent countless hours with friends and family hiking and exploring the outdoors. She also had an athletic and competitive side and enjoyed running races with her husband, sisters, and friends. She radiated kindness, intelligence and great wit. She had a wonderful sense of humor and the sweetest laugh. She was inspiring and thoughtful; strong and tender-hearted; beautiful and intelligent; but most of all she cared deeply for others and was a ray of sunshine everywhere she went.
To honor Amanda's love for the outdoors, her family has reserved a bench to be named in her memory at Duke Gardens, where she spent many afternoons studying and enjoying the sunshine. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorial donations be made to Sarah P.
