Billy Martin, 88, of Waco, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006 at St. Catherine's. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 7, at Chapel Hill Memorial Park with The Rev. Romilly "Cotton" Timmins officiating. Visitation with his family will follow the service.

Billy was born in Haskell, Texas to the late Homer Hall Martin, Sr. and Dora Lee (Holmes) Martin. The family moved back to Waco where he graduated from Waco High School in 1936. Billy served in the U.S. Navy, Pacific Theatre from 1940-1946, Third and Fifth Fleets.

His first assignment was the USS Enterprise, Torpedo Squadron No. 6 and he participated in the following engagements: Gilbert and Marshall Island Raid, Wake Island Raid, Marcus Island Raid, Doolittle Tokyo Raid and Battle of Midway. Squadron No. 6 was lost in battle and he was transferred to the USS Hornet.

Aboard the Hornet, he participated in the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands wherein the USS Hornet was disabled and sunk. The crew went overboard and were picked up by a destroyer and taken to New Caledonia.

His third assignment was with the Carrier Aircraft Service Unit (CASU) on the island of New Caledonia until the end of the war. He attained the rank of Warrant Officer and received an Honorable Discharge in 1946.

After returning to Waco, he met and married Doris Jean Webb on Nov. 2, 1946. They acquired Standard Hat Works where he had worked as a young man, and he retired in 1992. He loved music and sang in the church choir for many years at St. Alban's Episcopal Church where he was an active member for over 50 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Doris; and brothers: Edwin Jack Martin, Roy Lee Martin, and Glenn Vernon Martin.

He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Lee Allen, of Cedar Hill, and Brenda Jean Eastland, of Waco; grandsons, Kyle Douglas Eastland, of Waco, and Casey David Allen, of Cedar Hill; and brother, Homer Hall Martin, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
