Spouse of Marietta Nichols. A saddle and harness maker, arrived in Manlius around the time of the War of 1812. His first shop was on the north side of Seneca Street between North and Clinton Streets. His residence was on the present site of the Baptist church at the corner of Pleasant and North Streets. Asa Nims' second shop was in the west extension of the present Masonic building. This extension, known as the yellow brick building for many years, was divided into three parts. He occupied the middle two-floor section in 1824. He was known as Squire Nims. According to one account, Nims also was sometimes called Square Nims because he was so fair in his judgments made in the courtroom above his saddlery shop.
