He attended rural District #43 School in Colfax County. On October 28, 1936, Elmer was united in marriage to Lyda Koch in Columbus, Nebraska. They farmed in the Colfax County until 1962 when Elmer started his dirt work operation. He retired in 1984. Elmer was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Leigh. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
