This story appeared in the Antelope Valley Press on Wednesday, January 4, 2006.

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley pioneer Anna Godde died Dec. 29 in Lancaster at the age of 98.
Born in Quartz Hill on Oct. 31, 1907, Anna's family was one of the first to farm almonds on the Valley's west side.

Her mother, Katherine Meehl, emigrated to the area from Germany in 1889. Meehl and her first husband ran a saloon in what is now Palmdale. Following his death at an early age, Katherine married Willam Stratman, another German immigrant. They owned a ranch on the southeast corner of 60th Street West and Avenue N, where they started an almond orchard and helped found the California Almond Growers Association.

Anna attended Bellview School, a one-room schoolhouse at 45th Street West and Avenue N; her teachers often roomed with her family.

When she was 18, she married Lewis Orville Wilcoxon Jr., who died a few years later.

In 1940, she married Anthony Godde, the husband of her late half-sister. Anna had come to live with Godde following his wife's death seven years earlier to help take care of his six children.

Together, they farmed 160 acres, raising alfalfa and cattle, becoming known for selling calves for 4-H and Future Farmers of America projects.

Anna and Anthony were among the first farmers to donate a ton of hay toward the purchase of the original Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.

Anna was active in numerous organizations, including the Westside Agriculture Extension Group, Catholic Daughters of America and A.V. Community Chest. She was honored by the Red Cross for her contributions to the war effort during World War II, when she was also a member of the Aircraft Warning Service, watching for enemy aircraft from an observation post on 90th Street West.

An active member of the Catholic church, for years Anna cooked for the Sacred Heart Parish barbecue and provided flowers from her own garden for the church altar.

Until three years ago, Anna was also instrumental in the A.V. Oldtimers Barbecue, preparing invitations and tickets.

Anna is survived by step-children Forrest Godde, Barbara Reynolds, Lawrence "Butch" Godde, Gerald "Jerry" Goode, eight grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

On Thursday, Mumaw Funeral Home will hold a family visitation from 3 to 4 p.m., a friends visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. and a Rosary at 7 p.m.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lancaster. Burial will follow at Lancaster District Cemetery.
