Husband of Mary Williams
Only a portion of an article concerning Adam Owens' death was available on Newspapers.com.
The article in The Daily Independent mentions Mr. Owens retained his rank of first porter (hotel porter) under 17 masters, from Logan to W. J. Tilp. For many years the aged porter addressed Murphysboro fathers and sons alike as "Child." Dearest in his heart was the memory photograph of the old Logan race stables in what is now West Murphysboro, and the original Logan home razed some time ago for the building of the Christian Science church. John Henry, farmer at Henry Station on the car line, is in his seventies. But he remained "child" to Adam Owens, because Adam remembered him well when he was just turning into manhood.
Of Owen's early marriage little data could be had in addition to the fact that of this union he buried a son, Harve Owens, 56 years old, in Murphysboro three years ago. In later years he became infatuated with Mrs. Mary Teal and brought her here and married her. They were married August 3, 1883, had lived together in second floor apartments on the South Side square, 1019 Chestnut street, 28 years, where she survives him.
Adam Owen was a member of the colored Elks, I.O.O.F. and the Mezekial lodge. He was an ardent member and worker of the African Missionary Baptist church for many years. Rev. Bower, pastor, will conduct his funeral. The body will be buried in Tower Grove cemetery.
