Zela Jane McJunkin (pronounced Zeela) was born September 2, 1917, in Beaver City, NE, to Jesse Calvin Fetters and Ida Pearl Hensey/Fetters. In 1933, Zela's family moved to Payette, ID, where Zela and the family picked fruit, thinned lettuce and worked in packing sheds.

Zela married Ralph Dewey on October 27, 1938, in Weiser, ID, and raised their family on a dairy farm in rural Ontario, OR: Nancy, Leelan, Joan, and Susan. Zela left the dairy farm in 1976, bought a mobile home in Ontario, and worked as an in-home caregiver for elderly ladies. Zela loved music with a beat and loved to sing, yodel, play the piano by ear, dance, cook, and fish. Zela only had a grade-school education, but her memory was fantastic and could recall in great detail many experiences from her past, right up until her last couple months.

Zela loved her church and family, but especially babies and her grandchildren. Zela often recited stories to the little ones that she authored in her mind. Her daughter Joan captured some of those stories and had a book printed and bound for Zela to leave for her family. Husband Howard passed away in the Fall of 1997, and Zela moved to Salem, OR, in June 2005, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law Joan and Herb Shaw.

Zela began singing with the saints and angels at the feet of Jesus on December 15, 2013, at the age of 96. Zela was preceded in death by her father and mother; brothers Vessie, Lester, Enos and Andy Fetters; sisters Bertha Volkman and Velva Poland; daughter Nancy McEwen; and husband Howard McJunkin. Zela is survived by son-in-law Harold "Pebble" McEwen, Leeland and Gaylene Dewey, Joan and Herb Shaw, Susan and Brad Kennington, 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Zela will be interred in Ontario beside Howard with Celebration of Life Services at Ontario Treasure Valley Baptist Church on Saturday, December 21, at 3 PM MST, and West Hills Community Church in Salem on Monday, December 23, at 3 PM PST.
