Creede, CO
CREEDE—Our loving and godly husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Donnie Ramon Ferguson, went to be with the Lord on April 19, 2014. Words cannot express the impact he has made on the lives of his family and friends and all those who were around him. His life was truly a legacy that will stay with us forever.

Donnie, the oldest of three brothers and three sisters, was born on Feb. 5, 1941, in Elkhart, KS, to Charlie and Edith Ferguson. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, bother, Timothy Ferguson and cousin Ciana Ferguson. He is survived by wife Karen Ferguson, cousin Blaine (Sue) Ferguson, two brothers Charles (Callie) Ferguson and Monty Ferguson; three sisters Connie (Pat) Bryan, Elva (Bob) Ponder and Elaine (Stan) Louthan;sister in law Terry Ferguson; five children Donna (Steve) Boaldin, Pamela Ferguson, Jeff (Amy) Ferguson, Amy (Robert) Onofre, Stephanie (Chad) Hoskins; nine grandchildren Kayla Langston, Lacey (Peyton) Johnson, Clayton Boaldin, Tanner Boaldin, Torie Ferguson, Taylor Ferguson, Landry Hoskins, Keagan Hoskins, Seth Hoskins, Brooklyn Hoskins, Elie Ferguson and Jackson Onofre and three great-grandchildren, Kacey Langston, Gunner Langston and Paisely Greenhaw.

Donnie was raised by Charlie and Edith Ferguson with his six siblings on a farm southwest of Elkhart, Kan. He attended Yarbrough School and was involved in football and basketball. Donnie was a great athlete and holds the Yarbrough High School record in football for scoring 69 points in a single game. Following high school, Donnie attended Oklahoma State University and then decided to serve his country by joining the Army.

Donnie and Karen met at Yarbrough High School. They became high school sweethearts and the two were married for 51 years. Donnie served in the United States Army and was stationed overseas in Germany for over three years. While in service he received special recognition from the German Army for the rescue of a German helicopter. Donnie loved his time in Germany, working with helicopters and always had a passion for flying.

Their first daughter, Donna Rene’, was born in Germany. After leaving the service they returned to the Oklahoma panhandle one year later and had their second daughter, Pamela Jane. Three years later, Jeffrey Don was born, followed by Amy Sue and Stephanie Mae. Donnie and Karen raised their five children in the Oklahoma panhandle where he spent much of his time at Yarbrough High School attending his children’s sporting events.

Donnie worked for Panhandle Eastern in Elkhart, Kan. for over 25 years. During this time he developed strong relationships with co-workers and people of the Eva and Elkhart communities. Donnie and his family were members of the Bible Baptist Church where Donnie and Karen taught Sunday school classes and served as youth group leaders. Donnie served the church and community as a trustee with pastors Ken Dowell and David Johnson. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing town team basketball. Donnie always enjoyed spending his summer vacations in Creede with his family.

Towards the end of his career, Donnie moved to Gruver, Texas to continue working. Donnie and Karen attended the First Baptist Church of Gruver where they developed many relationships.

Donnie retired at the age of 58. He and wife Karen moved to Creede to live in a cabin on the Rio Grande River, which was his dream. There, Donnie was a member of the Creede Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon, trustee and elder with pastor Pat Knowlton.

He was a member of the Snow Country Explorers Snowmobile Club where he served as vice-president. Donnie enjoyed trout fishing, jeep rides and going on snow mobile trips. Donnie enjoyed traveling in the winter months visiting his children and grandchildren. During the summer months, all of his time was spent with the many close friends he loved dearly in Creede.

Donnie will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews and the many, many friends he had over the years. Our hearts ache, but there is Joy in knowing that he is now with our Heavenly Father.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 at the Creede Baptist Church in Creede with pastor Pat Knowlton officiating. The interment will follow at the Creede Cemetery. Viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Creede Baptist Church. Memorials may be given to the Creede Baptist Church in Creede in care of Strohmayer’s Funeral Home, 205 South Broadway, Monte Vista, CO 81144.

The family would like to thank all of their loved ones and friends for their amazing love and support. We especially want to thank the EMTs for their quick response and excellent care given to Donnie. We would also like to thank the doctor and staff at the Rio Grande Hospital for the outstanding care, compassion and comfort given our family during such a difficult time.
