David "D.W." Sartain Jr., 70, of Burwell died Friday, April 21, 2000, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Burwell. The Rev. Jane Ellefson will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery at Burwell.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Mr. Sartain was born Oct. 5, 1929, to David W. and Frances (Robke) Sartain Sr. in Burwell. He attended a rural Richland School and graduated from Burwell High School in 1946 at the age of 16. He was involved in farming and cattle feeding all his life except from 1952 to 1954, when he served in the U.S. Army Artillery. He was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas, and Ft. Lewis and Ft. On Sept. 11, 1954, he married Delores "Boots" Conard in Burwell. Mr. Sartain suffered with emphysema for many years which forced him to retire from the outside farming work. He continued to live on the farm his great-grandfather,
Frederick Robke, homesteaded in 1873.

His hobbies were fishing, which he and his wife especially enjoyed together at Lake McConaughy, hunting, sponsoring fishing teams at Lake Calamus and bowling. He was a life memer of the American Legion Post No. 298 of Burwell and a charter member of the Ord BPOE No. 2371. For 24 years he served on the North Loup River Public Power and Irrigation Board of Directors.

Survivors include a son, David of Burwell; a granddaughter; a daughter, Debra (Mrs. Ron) Hansen of Sargent; and a sister, Lois (Mrs. Arden) Lindsey of Arcadia, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife.
