George was the eighth child of George and Nancy Bowlin. His siblings were Susan Irene, Nancy, William Alvin, daughter died in infancy, Henry Lee, Ida Florence, Frances "Fannie" Leona, son died in infancy, David Hardy, Arthur Davis, Nannie Ella, Bessie Leona, Bertha "Birdie" Maybell, Jimmie Allene and Vera Etna Bowlin. In 1870, when George was two years old, his parents moved the family from Medon, Madison County, Tennessee to Richmond/Plantersville area of Lee County, Mississippi.

George married Willie Blythe on Oct. 30, 1890 at Richmond, Missisippi. They were the parents of five daughters: Clytee, Rebecca, Voleen, Edith Caroline and Elmo Gereed.

They resided in Richmond until 1910/1911 when they moved to Aliceville, Pickens County, Alabama. George's brother, David, had moved here in 1901, where he opened the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. David built the first brick home in Aliceville, that is now referred to as the "Park Home." George founded the Aliceville Merchant and Farmer's Bank and served as the first president. In 1916, George and Willie and their four youngest daughters moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he worked as an automobile salesman. Their oldest daughter, Clytee, remained in Aliceville where she had married in 1911. By 1919, the family had returned to Mooreville, Lee County, Mississippi. Willie died there on May 19, 1919.

Sometime between 1920 and 1930, George moved to South Fulton, Obion County, Tennessee. He remarried to Laura Ryan Moorehead. He died there on Feb. 18, 1932. He was buried beside Willie in Mississippi.
