Juanita Kathleen (Baxter) Hammons

June 16, 1917 - April 29, 2014

Juanita Kathleen (Baxter) Hammons, 96, of Springfield, MO passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at Elfindale Manor, where she had resided the past six years.

She was an avid supporter of the arts and an active participant in numerous civic and charitable organizations in the Springfield community.

She was born June 16, 1917 in Marionville, MO, the daughter of James Harley Baxter and Lillian Eckhart Baxter.

Juanita Hammons grew up on a farm in Marionville and received a teaching degree from Southwest Missouri State Teacher's College (now Missouri State University/MSU) in Springfield. She taught school in Marionville and elementary school at McDaniel School in Springfield. She was a member of First and Calvary Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband, John Q. Hammons, who passed away on May 26, 2013. She and John Q. were married September 2, 1949 in Springfield. Juanita is survived by several nieces, nephews and their families.

Graveside services will be Friday, May 2, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Dice Cemetery in Fairview, MO. No visitation is scheduled, however friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Thursday in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Springfield Regional Arts Council, The Creamery Arts Center, 411 North Sherman Parkway, Springfield, MO 65802, Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, 525 S. John Q. Hammons Parkway, Springfield, MO 65806, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
