Susan Shelton Abbott, 61, of Weems died April 29, 2014 peacefully at home surrounded by her family and her beloved dog, Petunia Ann after a long illness.
The daughter of Captain Edward Shelton and Ollie George Shelton, she was raised in Foxwells and Irvington, Virginia. She attended Lancaster County Public Schools and was a graduate of Pan American Business College in Richmond.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, George Abbott, Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kristy Abbott Higgins and Scott Higgins and a grandson, Logan Alexander Higgins, all of Weems. She is also survived by two sisters and their families, Lillian S. Cox of Gloucester and Hazel S. Farmer and her husband, Rev. John H. Farmer of Irvington; a brother, Louis D. Shelton and his wife, Mildred of Kilmarnock. Other survivors include her nieces, Jennifer Pittman and her daughters, Megan Hazell and Shelby Malone; Nan Crawford and her husband, Steve; her nephews, Robert E. Pittman and his wife, Sarah Beth and their sons, Porter and Nolan; Dennis Shelton and his wife, Marian and his son, L. B. Shelton and daughter, Emmy S. Ryan. From marriage, she is also known as Aunt Susie to 44 other nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
She had the privilege of working for Northern Neck Insurance Company in Irvington for over 40 years where she held the title of Vice President of Human Resources. She formed the Lancaster County Human Resource Association from HR Directors of the largest companies in the County and also was instrumental in starting The Young Professionals Group of Lancaster County. She worked diligently on the issues of work-force housing for skilled workers in Lancaster County and also served as a member and past Treasurer for Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce. She worked with the Lancaster County Sheriff's Department on the mentoring and employment for students in need of guidance. Other students were in her involvement with the Visions Program at Rappahannock Community College where she also assisted in setting up scholarship programs. She was a past Sunday school teacher at Claybrook Baptist Church and a current member of Irvington Baptist Church.
She was known for her story telling, her humor and philanthropy. She was also known as an avid animal lover and protector.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p. m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Irvington Baptist Church, Irvington with interment in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p. m. Friday, May 2 at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock.
